The day of Europe is celebrated today.
Foreign Affairs Minister of France Robert Schuman delivered a speech in Paris, on May 9, 1950,
where he proposed the idea of European integration. Thus, 9 May is celebrated
as the birthday of the European Union.
Its implementation started in 1951, when the European Coal and Steel
Union was founded with a participation of the 6 countries (France, Germany,
Italy, Netherlands, Belgium
and Luxembourg).
Nowadays, the European Union includes 25 countries.
According to the other sources, May 5 is also considered as a day of
European Union, as in 1949, the statute of the European Council was signed in London on May 5. It came
into force on August 3 of the same year and for today, it is considered as Europe’s one of the largest representative consultative
organization. More than 50 countries, including Georgia, are united in the European
Council.
