Yahukovych’s new doctrine: Ukraine is not going to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
In Ukraine’s new military doctrine and national
security strategy, which was signed on June 8 by Viktor
Yanukovych, Ukraine
officially declares that it is not going to join those countries that
recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia
in August 2008.
In one
of the paragraphs of the document it is underlined that Ukraine intends
to support international efforts aimed against legitimization of the status of
self-proclaimed entities on territories of States in the region.
Ukraine’s new military doctrine is
rather confrontational regarding Russia as well. In particular, it
reads that Russia will no
longer have the right of arbitrarily using Sevastopol-based Black Sea Fleet
against third countries and Kiev’s
agreement will be required for such cases. Otherwise, Moscow’s
action will be perceived as Russia’s
preparation for a war against Ukraine.
