Anders Fogh Rasmussen: Georgia is a special partner for NATO

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

After the meeting, the sides made official statements and answered on questions of Media. 

Anders Fogh Rasmussen spoke about results of successful reforms recently carried out in Georgia and noted that Georgia has become a model of commitment, cooperation and connectivity with the Alliance and fulfillment of its tasks.

Rasmussen also particularly noted Georgia’s successful participation in ISAF-mission and said that by participating in this program, Georgia takes care of strengthening its own security, as well as, creation of world safety.    

Georgia is a special partner for NATO. We agreed at the Bucharest Summit in 2008 that Georgia will become a member of NATO. That decision stands firm. And let me reaffirm: that Alliance recognizes Georgia’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty within internationally recognized borders. The Alliance does not recognize the elections held recently in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia” – NATO secretary General said. 

According the information of President’s administration, on behalf of the Georgian people, Mikheil Saakashvili reaffirmed his desire to join Euro-Atlantic alliance. Also, he spoke about importance of holding democratic elections in Georgia and about the process of foreign observers’ involvement.  

At this moment, NATO-Georgia Commission joint session is held in NATO general headquarters.
