Russia fights for removal of the term “occupied territories of Georgia” from the OSCE resolution text
Today
the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will consider a draft resolution, where
Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions are mentioned as occupied territories.
The
initiator of the resolution is Polish Deputy Mikheil Sherba and co-authors are
36 MPs from 9 OSCE member countries.
Resolution
author believes that the OSCE will finally adopt this strict document, despite
the fact that Russia has more “supporters” in this organization than in other
international unions.
According
to Sherba, European Christian-Democrats, Conservators and Liberals are going to
support the resolution.
It
became known, that German Free Democrats party tried to remove term “occupied
territories” from the resolution text. “Echo Moskvi” reported that the party
has proposed amendment, according to which Abkhazia and, the so-called, South
Ossetia were mentioned not as occupied territories, but as “breakaway regions”.
However this amendment failed to gain enough supporters to become an issue of
discussion.
According
to the resolution presented by Mikheil Sherba, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly
calls on the parties to abide by the principles of international law, to
implement the ceasefire agreement, to ensure the safe and dignified return of
refugees and the most important, the Assembly “urges the Russian government and
the parliament, as well as the de-facto authorities of Georgian regions -
Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to allow EU Observers’ Mission to have unhindered
access to the occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia”.
Today
in Monaco, in the frameworks of the OSCE annual session, only discussion on the
resolution about Georgia will be held. The document will be voted on
Monday.
