Russian intelligence officer’s involuntary confession: I sincerely believed that ours would go to Tbilisi

Russian intelligence officer Alexei Ukhvatov, who was participating in the 2008 August war, is still offended by his commanders, as they lied to him…

However, at this time, the details about which he speaks while recalling some episodes of 5-day war are more interesting rather than his offences.
He was doing everything except intelligence work in August war.

“We should not have fought and should not have done all those nonsense things.
I mean, we should have fought defined, but not as it was demanded from us. To be honest, the whole process of setting the task traumatized me. Our group, all my 50 people, should have reached the place to see what was going on there; we should have described where exactly was standing each of the enemy’s soldiers, and should have pass this information to the higher headquarters. But already in the process the task was suddenly changed. We were told: You will enter the town, capture several blocks, as far as possible, then will stop there for some 10-12 hours and if you manage to do that too, you will go forward and so on” – says the intelligence officer.

He entered Tskhinvali. As he says, South-east and South-west part of the city was detained by him and his team at night. Ukhvatov does not mention the date, but he says later on as he continues telling the story, that Georgians entered Tskhinvali only after he and his “colleagues” were sent by their commanders for fighting and capturing Tskhinvali.

“Georgians started the attack at 8 am. We conducted organization of all this issues with commanders. Theoretically, somewhere at 11 o’clock, our troops should have reached my positions; I should have left them and should have continued my work – intelligence. Though, as an irony of fait, no one came…”

After this, Ukhvatov went to the peacekeeping battalion, where, as he says, the panic, morally destroyed soldiers and refugees met him. After withdrawing them from the city, he returned back; “we again detained the blocks, again got in the neck, but our new forces came on this time. We went to Gori. The buses and trolley-busses were moving there, people were standing on the bus stops. No one was waiting for the war. We did not touched Gori, we only riddled the military part a bit; as for the other time, we were chasing Georgians in the woods for two nights.

14 kilometers away from Tbilisi, we were caught by the commander of land forces and he started shouting at me. I cannot get, why was he shouting? Our last radio station was uncharged and we did not know the last information. We sincerely believed, that our forces would go to Tbilisi, I have drawn myself everything on the map, I knew what I was doing…”

After the war, this person got a title of a hero. On the journalists question regarding the purpose of getting this award, his answer was the fallowing:

„ Да хрен его знает! “ (“ah, hell knows”), I do not know why they gave me the title of a hero. Maybe because I withdrew the children? But that was not my task. Maybe because I was sitting in the basements of Tskhinvali and fighting instead of infantry? However, neither this is my task. I am glad to get the award, but I am still angry on the leadership: it was not a first case when they told me they would come in two hours, and later I had to deal with everything alone for 3 days.

The intelligence officer, Ukhvatov is that “hero”, who had received the honor to be a consultant of “Eight of August” – the feature film ordered by Kremlin. However, as it turns out, Ukhvatov liked neither the real war lead by his commanders, nor the “feature-documentary” version of it.
