Occupied regions of Georgia are a transit corridor through which drugs leaks from Asia to Europe. Such a conclusion is made in the 2012 international narcotics control strategy report of United States’ drugs department.

“Many observers believe that separatist regions of Georgia are the main corridors of drug smuggling. Abkhazia and South Ossetia separatist regions are still not covered by Georgian legislation. There is an assumption, that drugs are transferred exactly through these territories” – the report said.

Herewith, it is noted in the document, that “this information cannot be verified, as the Russian occupation forces and de-facto authorities of the regions are changing almost no information connected to the drug movement, with Georgian side”.

In the state department report, Georgia is marked as a drugs non-producing country and it is mentioned that its state government has strengthened prevention and drug treatment programs and in general, actions against narcotics.
Abkhazians themselves do not hide the fact that drug addiction remains one of the biggest problems in Abkhazia.

In 2011, someone known as Tengiz Agrba wrote, that many people die of drug addiction in Abkhazia and this disease has become a serious problem for demography. According to him, purchasing drugs is no longer a problem there and is possible without any extra efforts. Drug-dealers enrich in front of everyone’s eyes and they become millionaires; they draw more and more new people into this business and all it happens even without any prevention.

The author of the article explains it with a depressive situation created in Abkhazia. He says that a young man begins to walk in the streets as there is no other alternative. System of values is set wrong, crime and being representative of the black world is considered as a glorious job.

Not long ago, a criminal case against militia captain Revaz Akhsalba was launched; he was supplying prisoners with drugs.

However, there are only few cases, when people involved in this business have to be charged. Abkhazia is mentioned as one of the most important points of narco-transitions in the many international studies. These facts are well known in Russia as well, which controls all the entrance-exits and in general, the whole life in Abkhazia.

Abkhazians themselves are saying that the whole Abkhazian youth (and not only youth) are drug abusers today. 9 men from 10 are the users. At first Russian militaries with highest ranks were warming their hands with this business, but now it is available for many people. Therefore, Abkhazians themselves are thinking - maybe the prosperous drug-business is a Russian plan of making Abkhazian territories depopulated?
